Combe Gallery English 19th Century Art; Pre-Raphaelites The core of paintings in this gallery consists of work painted in the second half of the 19th century by a group of English artists known as the Pre-Raphaelites on account of their admiration for the work of Italian artists before the age of Raphael. Dante Gabriel Rossetti, one of the seven founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, was inspired by the flat, decorative style of early Italian art, but his fellow Pre-Raphaelites, William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais, tried to eliminate all conventional forms of representation from their pictures and to paint the natural world in laborious detail. This brought a parting of the ways for the movement, with Rossetti's followers Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris adopting Rossetti's medievalism, while Arthur Hughes and John William Inchbold were attracted by the meticulous naturalism of Hunt and Millais. The gallery is named after Thomas Combe (1797-1872), Superintendent of the University Press in Oxford, who was one of the earliest collectors of Pre-Raphaelite painting. Several of the pictures formed part of the bequest of his widow in 1894.

They could also make it look absolutely hideous. I've seen many examples of both. Of course, I'm referring to images that are meant to be actual elements of the design of a page. I talk more about that in my Web Design: Graphics section. Here I would like to talk about images designed more for their own sake. They aren't part of a larger design scheme. They are meant to stand on their own. I'll show you some of the images that I make when I get creative. The images are below, in smaller form. Click on the each of the smaller images to view a larger version. I often visit the B3TA web site to see what the other people there are doing graphically. It's often irreverent, and quite silly on the surface, but it's loads of fun. I've created images for the weekly competition there, and some of those are shown below. T he image on the right is one that I posted on the B3TA web site. The basis is a photograph of a kitten, commonly referred to there as no hands . I used the photograph of the kitten to created a coin, embossed with the kitten's likeness, complete with its own coin holder. It is marked
