Extractions: In the film The Madness of King George, the Puritan pastor charged with monitoring and rectifying the conduct of the crazed George III says to him firmly, ominously, "I have you in my eye, Sir. I shall keep you in my eye." This minatory Puritan takes on a role most Protestants reserve for themselves: keeping an eye on the self. In fact, such self-gazing represents a somewhat paradoxical Reformed obsession. Reformed theology mandated a focus on the divine, not on the human subject. Yet the need for keeping a constant watch over the potentially vagrant self, fashioned of fallen nature, led many Reformed believers to concentrate increasingly on policing their own inner states: precisely because the self is sinful and wants too much attention, one must gaze vigilantly inward in order to keep the self down and out of trouble. This incessant tracking of possible shortcomings and pitfalls could blur the necessary focus on divine grace.
Rem's Tai Chi Page A personal page discussing Rem's experience with Tai Chi, and what people usually mean when they talk about Qi. http://www.rembrandt.gen.nz/rem/taichi.html
Extractions: There are many different reasons for doing Tai Chi. Some people do it for spiritual enlightenment. I had already had spiritual enlightenment before I started Tai Chi, so that didn't inspire me. Some do it for health. I think Tai Chi is good for my health (which is nice), but that didn't inspire me to do it. What inspired me is it's application as a martial art. Consequently it became more of a hobby that fascinated me than the pursuit of a useful skill. Tai Chi is a formidable combat art, but the time I've spent practising it is not justifiable in terms of the likelyhood that I will need such self defence skills. It is. A good question, but hard to explain. It's a bit like trying to explain quantum physics and relativity to someone who is just coming to grips with Newtonian mechanics. However I'll try to give a somewhat simplified explanation. It should be noted that I'm no Tai Chi master, and have plenty to learn about the intricate art of Tai Chi myself. Tai Chi focuses on using precise minimal movements to overcome your opponent. Tai Chi uses refined gentle movements rather than brute force and large movements. Practitioners aim to explore, understand and use to their advantage every little movement that their body (andtheir opponents body) makes.

Extractions: Office of Naval Research Photo: Kenwood House, London Your rich uncle dies and leaves you a painted masterpiece he's had hidden away for years. But, it's scratched, torn, and much of the paint has flaked away. You could take it to a painting restorationist, but this can take months and in any case, restoration is very subjective. What to do? You call a mathematician of course. They call it partial differential equation-based interpolation of lost image regions, but don't let that scare you. It's just inpainting the art of modifying an image in an undetectable form done by mathematical algorithm instead of conservator subjectivity. Scientists funded by the Office of Naval Research have developed computer techniques that can now automate a large part of a formerly laborious process, and eliminate the subjectivity most conservators working by hand bring to the job. The scientists hard at work on this are Guillermo Sapiro (University of Minnesota) and Andrea Bertozzi (Duke University) and a few of their students and collaborators. Sapiro was interested in image processing in general and found the problem of inpainting restoring works of art curiously relevant to his work He watched restorationists at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and it occurred to him that he could capture what they were doing in a computer algorithm if he could find the right partial differential equations. Sapiro was familiar with Bertozzi's work in fluid dynamics, and encouraged by ONR's Wen Masters, science officer overseeing the research, they found that the inpainting equations Sapiro was using were connected with work being done by Bertozzi with Navier-Stokes equations.
