Extractions: Prinsep returned to England and exhibited a hundred pictures at the Royal Academy from 1862 and 1904. A versatile artist and a very wealthy one after his marriage to the well-connected Florence Leyland, he painted historical subjects and portraits. He also tried to paint classical and biblical subjects, but the results were dull and no match for the more inspired flights of imagination to be seen in the works of the more famous trio of classical painters, Alma-Tadema Leighton and Poynter . In 1876 Prinsep was commissioned by the Indian government to paint the durbar that was held to proclaim Queen Victoria the Empress of India. The result was a gigantic canvas

As teachers, the KISS Approach enables us to be our students' "godparents." In the process of using the KISS Approach, teachers will find many opportunities to give students chances to excel. Often, these chances will be related to opportunities to change their attitudes towards grammar and towards their self-images. These opportunities may be as simple as telling students about the "advanced constructions" in their writing. We all blossom under the sunshine of praise, and KISS offers many opportunities for it. More importantly, however, the KISS Approach can provide students with the opportunity for substantive control of their writing styles. In effect, it can eliminate the "pumpkin phenomenon." By "pumpkin phenomenon," I have in mind most of the current attempts to improve students' writing styles. These attempts come in a variety of methods and exercises, from sentence combining to teaching students to use appositives, etc. Teachers who make these attempts believe in their effectiveness (obviously), but there is no proof that they have any long-term effect on the majority of students. Behavioral theory, moreover, strongly suggests that they have little lasting effect. The reason for this is simple because they do not tie into the students' conscious understanding of how sentences work, the effects of all these exercises die away, just as the training of a rat dies away.

Extractions: The photographs: Famous Men and Fair Women To show the range of Cameron's photographic work, this exhibition has been presented in three discrete sections that encompass her major subject matter. This section includes many of Cameron's most celebrated portraits and takes its title from the first monograph on her work written by Roger Fry and her great niece, Virginia Woolf in 1926. In common with her sisters, Cameron actively sought out the company of the most notable men and women of the period and her models included the great writer Alfred, Lord Tennyson and astronomer and scientist Sir John Herschel. She also commandeered members of her staff, her family and even strangers she found walking near her house to sit for her camera. Cameron was especially drawn to photographing notable men of the period, hoping through her portraits to reveal something of the qualities that made them 'great'. The almost religious zeal with which she approached her creative task resulted in some remarkably expressive and direct photographs, most notably her portrait of her "beloved friend . . . Teacher and High Priest", Sir John Herschel. Cameron's approach here, as with many of her portraits, was simple: she reduced the background clutter and accessories often associated with portraits of the period, focusing instead on the head of the subject which fills the frame.
