Extractions: The Times Moday 14th November 1904. Death Notice. PRINSEP On the 11th inst. From the result of an operation Valentine Cameron Prinsep RA, second son of the late Henry Thoby Prinsep, aged 66 years. OBITUARY Mr Val Prinsep RA. Another serious loss has befallen the Royal Academy by the death of Mr Valentine Cameron Prinsep RA, which occurred on Friday at Holland-park from the effects of an operation. To all his acquaintances the sight of his tall and sturdy figure and the knowledge that his eminent father lived to be 86, seemed to promise a long life to "Val" as he was always affectionately called; and the news of his death will therefore be as unexpected as it is lamentable. Mr Prinsep's wife survives him, and he leaves three sons. A Memorial Service will be held at St Paul's Cathedral at 11.30 on Wednesday next. Friends desiring to attend are required to apply to Mr Charles T Knight, 1 Holland-park-road, Kensington, for a card of admission. The interment will take place on the afternoon of the same day at Brompton Cemetery, at an hour to be fixed hereafter. MY COMMENTS As mentioned in the obituary Val Prinsep was a robust young man, with a physique like a heavyweight prize-fighter. When he was young he was 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighed 230 lbs, without, it was said, an ounce of fat. It was widely held that he did not fulfill his artistic potential, with commentators speculating this was due to his marriage to the fabulously wealthy Florence Leyland, or the breadth of his interests. Perhaps it was a combination of both? Val Prinsep's artistic debt to, and lifelong friendship with Lord Leighton are mentioned-he was with the PRA when he died. He was a genial, popular man. One of the three sons of Val and Florence was Anthony Leyland Prinsep, a well-known theatrical manager, producer of many successful plays at the Globe Theatre in the 1920s.

Extractions: Val Prinsep, the Pre-Raphaelite , historical and genre painter, was born in Calcutta, son of an Indian civil servant. He was educated in England, where his remarkable circle of family friends included Rossetti Ruskin , Carlyle, Gladstone, Disraeli, Halle and Darwin. It was G. F. Watts who persuaded Prinsep to take up painting, and he studied in Paris under Gleyre, where his fellow students included E. J. Poynter , Du Maurier and Whistler. Back in England, Prinsep was one of those who assisted Rossetti in the fresco decorations of the Oxford Union in 1857. He travelled to Italy in the company of Burne-Jones in 1859-60, and on his return to London became quite successful. In 1878 he was elected ARA, and a fortuitous marriage in 1884 (to Florence Leyland, daughter of a rich ship-owner from Liverpool) made him financially independent. He became RA somewhat tardily in 1894, and from 1900-1903 was Professor of Painting at the Academy. Prinsep produced several pictures in the Pre-Raphaelite style, including

Extractions: The MP for Torquay reads a newspaper. The colours white, ochre, grey, brown, black add to the stiffness of the pose and the high finish to give a very conventional impression. However, his wife, virtuously busy in writing a letter, is quite a catch with Daisy Mutlar eyelids and a saucy short haircut. Her emerald green dress is very striking indeed, relieved by touches of red, pink and old gold.

Extractions: Place of Death : Holland Park, London Valentine ('Val') Cameron Prinsep, a portrait, historical and genre painter and writer, was the son of Henry Thoby Prinsep, a wealthy Indian civil servant, and Sara Pattle, the daughter of James Pattle, a Bengali civil servant. He was one of four children, his siblings being Henry, Arthur and Alice. In 1884 Val married Florence Leyland, the daughter of JW's patron, the Liverpool collector and shipping magnate F. R. Leyland. His maternal aunt Virginia, who lived for a time with his family in London, was a known beauty and modelled for George Frederick Watts. His maternal aunt Julia Margaret Cameron was a photographer. When the Prinsep family took Little Holland House in Kensington in December 1850 G. F. Watts was invited to join them. In fact he became a guest in their home until 1875. Little Holland House became something of a haven for artists and writers, including Thackeray, Tennyson, Browning, Trollope, Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Val, who was encouraged to become a painter by Watts, studied under the artist from 1856. The following year he worked with members of the Pre-Raphaelite circle on the Oxford Union murals, painting Sir Pelleas Leaving the Lady Ettarde . Early works such as the Honey Queen (c. 1859; Manchester City Art Gallery) showed the influence which the art of Rossetti and Burne-Jones had on him. He toured Italy with Burne-Jones in 1859.

Extractions: (British, 1838-1904) Born in Calcutta, the son of an Indian civil servant who was able to afford a house in Holland Park, one of the most fashionable areas of London, and to send his son to Haileybury, Valetine Prinsep was also fortunate to have as his teacher, George Frederick Watts , an historical and portrait painter, now regarded as one of the foremost of the Victorian artists. Watts, who seems to have been a permanent guest in the Prinseps' home - a meeting place for all the major artists, poets and writers of the day - eventually suggested that Valentine should go to Paris to complete his art education under Gleyre , who was considered by English students to be the best art teacher in France. Prinsep returned to England and exhibited a hundred pictures at the Royal Academy from 1862 and 1904. A versatile artist and a very wealthy one after his marriage to the well-connected Florence Leyland, he painted historical subjects and portraits. He also tried to paint classical and biblical subjects, but the results were dull and no match for the more inspired flights of imagination to be seen in the works of the more famous trio of classical painters, Alma-Tadema, Leighton and Poynter
