Stanley Cursiter's remarks on Joseph Paton's happy childhood with parents who encouraged him to draw and paint suggest that the artist's later endeavors in fairylore might have come to him quite naturally; his mother, Catherine McDiarmid Paton, was "deeply interested in tradition, folklore, the supernatural, and the fairy-stories of the Celts" (86). Whatever its inspiration, Paton's canvas The Reconciliation of Oberon and Titania The Quarrel of Oberon and Titania The Art Journal judged The Quarrel of Oberon and Titania , shown in 1850 at the the Royal Scottish Academy, "the great original feature of the Exhibition this year." To some the canvas is overwhelmingly busy with too many details to produce a unified effect, but to The Art Journal this was a virtue that revealed a "quantity of thought" in a painting that "contains within itself materials for a dozen paintings." The reviewer concentrates on just a small portion of the canvas (see

Extractions: Sir Joseph Noel Paton (he was knighted in 1866) was born in Dunfermline, Scotland, in 1821. Encouraged from an early age to draw and paint, he entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1843; there he met John Everett Millais and their friendship lasted throughout their lives. Paton was never part of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood because he returned to Scotland and left Millais and his circle of Pre-Raphaelite painters, but not before he studied the basic elements of their craftsmanship and thoroughly absorbed many of their attitudes towards art. Christopher Wood notes that Paton's landscapes are full of Pre-Raphaelite detail ( The Pre-Raphaelites , 90) and suggests that he was, although only on the fringes of the Brotherhood, their most notable follower in Scotland. Two paintings in particular The Bluidie Tryst (1855) and Hesperus (1857)demonstrate that in the 1850's he was "fully sympathetic" with the Brotherhood and that both pictures are "highly romantic in theme" and "show that Paton had completely mastered Pre-Raphaelite techniques" (77). Paton's later paintings, dealing often with religious themes, made him even more famous in his own lifetime, but they are less familiar to us today and less admired. He is known now primarily through his two paintings in the fairy genre that hang in Edinburgh's National Gallery of Scotland

Extractions: Noel Paton's link with the Pre-Raphaelite movement came though a lifelong friendship with Millais. Paton, born in Dunfermline, Scotland, met the fourteen year old Millais when they were both students at the Royal Academy Schools. In the 1840s, Paton's works were hard-edged and crowded like those of Maclise, but in the 1850s, under Pre-Raphaelite influence, he developed a new sharpness of observation. Ruskin commended such pictures as the " Bludie Tryst " (1855, Royal Academy 1858), which is now in Glasgow Art Gallery, for "perfect draughtsmanship". Paton is remembered today for his fairy paintings, such as the " Quarrel of Oberon and Titania " (1849, National Gallery of Scotland), also for a small number of modern life paintings produced under Pre-Raphaelite influence. The most famous is " In Memoriam " (1858, Alexander Whitelaw collection 1911, Sotheby's London November 1989; known through the engraving), commemorating British women killed in the Indian Mutiny. However, after 1870 Paton concentrated on religious pictures painted in a Nazarene style. The artist enjoyed a successful official career. He was a prize winner in the Westminster Hall Competitions for 1845 and 1847. He was elected Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1847 and Member in 1850. Queen Victoria appointed him Her Majesty's Linmer for Scotland and knighted him in 1866 and also commissioned his pictures for the prayer room at Osborne House, Isle of Wight. However his work is still under-rated. The most substantial published study of his art appeared as long ago as 1895, and the only major modern exhibition of his work took place in 1967, organised by the Scottish Arts Council in Edinburgh.
