Extractions: John Ruskin's first visit to Rome was during the family tour of 1841, and although in his diary there follow plenty of references to St Peter's, there are none to the Sistine Chapel except for his visit on the last day. In youthful exuberance he praised Michelangelo and clearly at this time, he liked Rome and the Romans. Not until he came again to Rome in 1872 did Ruskin visit the chapel, when he described the Michelangelo ceiling as being 'all arms and legs'. In the intervening period his views on Michelangelo became somewhat mixed, and at one stage he even referred to him as a monster! Staying as previously at Hotel Roussie in the Piazza del Popolo, he spent the next fifteen days copying Zipporah, also Zipporah's pet doggie in the same fresco (he loved dogs!) and some sheep. In a letter to Joan Severn he described how each morning he left the hotel at about 10 o'clock, driving to the chapel in an open one-horse carriage, then working from 11.00 am until 2.00 pm, when the public were again allowed entrance. The authorities permitted only three scaffold platforms in the chapel, and in the case of the Moses fresco, this was some 5.5 metres (approximately 18 feet) above floor level; in other words, the height of the eaves of a modern house. As an architect, not unused to climbing ladders, working at this height would still disturb me, as, unlike its modern counterpart, a wooden scaffold and platform were likely to be rather wobbly. Then, clambering about a building never seemed to worry Ruskin and he evidently enjoyed sharing the peace of the chapel with only two other artists, or so he said.
