Há décadas que a questão metodológica que imprimia uma relação de puro confronto entre obras, autores ou temas foi se esvaziando. Termos como fonte, origem, influência, autonomia, dependência, metrópole e periferia perderam o seu peso, para flagrar na atual virada de século uma rota que se dá pela acumulação das formas de criação artística e literária: uma espécie de aglutinação informacional que, ao invés de comparar pelo sinal de subtração, utiliza o valor de somatório para a sua operação estética. Com efeito, o caminho a ser trilhado pela Literatura Comparada, hoje, precisa levar em consideração a idéia wagneriana de arte total, embutida na arte contemporânea. Em sua prática de arte total, Richard Wagner afirmava a capacidade que cada meio de expressão artística tem em atravessar suas fronteiras formais, transpassando histérica e herculeamente os seus limites, à procura do pleno da arte, da plenitude do excesso (2). Este excesso, que acumula sem discriminar uma diversidade de vozes, parte do pressuposto de que a expressividade dos objetos artísticos, se dá justamente na apreensão globalizante de sua construção. Não sendo ermo detalhe, nem harmonia perene, a obra é efeito de um todo internamente em confronto e em diálogo com diversos sistemas discursivos. A estética do excesso nasce, assim, dentro de sistemas culturais abertos que ignoram um centro fixo como valor da conformação e irradiação das simetrias. Tais sistemas descentrados organizam-se assimetricamente e ativam forças que ultrapassam seus limites.
