     Extractions: Klee met Alexej Jawlensky, Vasily Kandinsky , August Macke, Franz Marc , and other avant-garde figures in 1911; he participated in important shows of advanced art, including the second Blaue Reiter exhibition at Galerie Hans Goltz, Munich, in 1912, and the Erste deutsche Herbstsalon at the Der Sturm Gallery, Berlin, in 1913. In 1912, he visited Paris for the second time, where he saw the work of Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso and met Robert Delaunay . Klee helped found the Neue Münchner Secession in 1914. Color became central to his art only after a revelatory trip to Tunisia in 1914. In 1920, a major Klee retrospective was held at the Galerie Hans Goltz, Munich; his Schöpferische Konfession was published; he was also appointed to the faculty of the Bauhaus more Entartete Kunst, in 1937. Major Klee exhibitions took place in Bern and Basel in 1935 and in Zurich in 1940. Klee died on June 29, 1940, in Muralto-Locarno, Switzerland.

     Extractions: Born in Munchenbuchsee, Switzerland in 1879, Klee studied art at the Munich Academy of Fine Art from 1898 to 1901. At the beginning of the Great War he was living in Germany and was conscripted, but did not see active service. He describes his wartime experiences in Diaries: 1898-1918 Subsequent to the First World War, Klee taught art at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau where he was held in high regard for both his teaching and his writing. It was during this period that he wrote the Pedagogical Sketchbook (1925). With Hitler's rise to power and the fascist state's view of his paintings as "degenerate art", he returned to Switzerland.      Extractions: Acquis par Jean Masurel en 1941 - Donation Geneviève et Jean Masurel, 1979 T out au long de sa vie, Paul Klee s’est efforcé de mettre en application sa célèbre formule « L’art ne rapporte pas le visible, il rend visible ». Pour lui, la peinture a des dimensions spécifiques : la ligne, les couleurs, les valeurs. Il part du graphisme pour aller au thème, créant d’abord la forme afin de la reconnaître ensuite pour ce qu’elle est par la désignation d’un titre, souvent poétique et mystérieux. Le tableau 17 épices a été peint en 1931, année durant laquelle Klee exécute une série de toiles de moyens formats dites « divisionnistes ». La composition s’établit en un système de touches de couleurs complémentaires comme chez les néo-impressionnistes ; ce style a pu lui être inspiré par les mosaïques de Ravenne, qu’il vit en 1926 lors d’un voyage. Son tableau est construit à l’image d’un jeu de piste : le peintre dissémine sur la totalité du champ pictural des chiffres, des lignes qui s’entrecroisent, des éléments non mimétiques à caractère géométrisant (croissant de lune, triangle, parallélépipède, cercle). Chez Klee, on observe souvent des régularités formelles qui ne désignent rien de la réalité quotidienne. Le sens est produit par le système de composition et non par la figuration ; il y a volonté chez ce peintre de constituer l’oeuvre comme un organisme régi par ses règles propres.
