Extractions: St. Peter's, Rome, St. Peter's, Rome reveals Inness' special fascination with Italy, a concern he shared with many nineteenth-century American painters. Attracted to both the man-made and natural beauty of the country, Inness explored is historical resonance in his paintings of the city and countryside surrounding Rome. St. Peter's Basilica, which dominates the skyline of the painting, is closely associated with the Eternal City. Inness represented it in a watercolor and three paintings resulting from his first European trip of the 1850s. After a later trip in the early 1870s, he painted two final works depicting the domes of the basilica. The painting, dated five years after Inness' return to the United States, is based on the watercolor study that was presumably executed from nature. Both works depict St. Peter's from a slope to the northeast of the basilica near the Villa Giulia, a spot recognized in the standard guidebooks of the day as affording a splendid view of the Vatican. A portion of Bernini's colonnade, encircling St. Peter's Square, may be seen to the left. In the foreground, at the bottom of the slope, is the tunnel known as the Arco Oscuro, with a gate in a wall to its left. Inness' view is composite, and a second study, now lost, may have provided some of these additional details.

The current exhibition at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, GEORGE INNESS, LANDSCAPES: HIS SIGNATURE YEARS 1884-1894 (from the Oakland Art Museum) leaves no doubt about the stature of his work in his "declining years." As we walk in the large gallery at the Museum of Art, we are immediately struck by the massive strength that glows from his naturalistic studies. Inness professed that his purpose as a landscape artist was "not to imitate a fixed material condition, but to represent a living motion." Extractions: George Inness, born in the Hudson River town of Newburgh, New York, is one of the most important members of the "Hudson River School" of painting. When his family moved to Newark, New Jersey, Inness began work as a grocer's clerk before finding a better position with a map-making firm. Self-taught at first, he began painting seriously in 1841 and had his first exhibition at the National Academy of Design four years later. Three trips abroad in the next twenty-five years brought him into contact with the work of John Constable , J.M.W. Turner , Jean-Baptiste Corot , Eugene Delacroix , and the Barbizon painters. From their paintings, he carried away those elements best suited to his personal vision of American landscapes; the use of color from Delacroix and the broad handling of nature from Corot and from the Barbizon School.

Extractions: Since the beginning of Inness's artistic maturity, the appearance, inspiration, and expressive effect of his paintings was most frequently described as poetic. And as, over time, the style of his paintings became increasingly more suggestive, as their form became broader and their resemblance's to natural appearance less and less direct, their poetic content seemed to grow in direct proportion, reaching its highest and purest state in paintings of the last few years of his life. Painted the year before Inness's death, Hazy Morning, Montclair, New Jersey is one of those late poetic paintings. The allusiveness of its style, with all solid form blurred, corroded, and reduced to a pervasive vaporous substance more metaphysical than physical in nature-"a subtle essence which exists in all things of the material world" that constitutes "an atmosphere about the bald detail of facts,"-could be regarded as a logical development and climax of Inness's lifelong belief in the value of spiritual meaning, emotional expression, and suggestion: "You must suggest to me reality-you can never show me reality." Inness, however, disclaimed poetic vagueness unequivocally: "Poetry is

He painted primarily in Rome and its environs, finding many of his subjects among the scenic lakes and deep valleys of the Alban Hills and the hilltop towns. The rosy beige, tan, and white buildings of the town of Ariccia crown a ridge that stretches across the middle distance of this panoramic painting. The geometry of the town is balanced by three horizontal elements: the long bridge in the foreground, the horizon, and the strata of thin clouds. The ancestral home of the Innes(s) Clan is Moray, in the Highlands of Scotland, which covers the lands from Spey to Lossie along the North Sea coast. This is Malt Whiskey country, where the vast majority of Scotch distillaries are located. Innes means 'greens', and refers to the wide plain of grass that stretched between the tall white mansion of Innes (built by Sir Robert in 1646) and the River Lossie. Spent his youth in Newark, NJ, left for NYC at age 16 to be a map engraver. In 1847 traveled to Europe where he was influenced by Jean-Francois Millet, Narcisse Virgil Diaz de laPena, Theodore Rousseau, and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, who all were active in the Barbizon style. This new way of painting was influenced by Swedenborgian mysticism, which resulted in new techniques for Inness by 1878.
