Until then, people had considered our mountain hinterlands brutal rather than beautiful, but inspired by neoclassical masters like Claude Lorraine, Wilson bathed his native Wales in a golden Italianate glow. This picture of Cadair Idris in Snowdonia is typical.

Take three artist friends who have known each other since they were students at Goldsmiths College in the late 1980s; add a measure of international celebrity; mix in equal proportions; and stir with Tate curators, to make a pizza... A pizza? Well, this an image favoured by Sarah Lucas splashed as wallpaper across the exhibition's entrance. Within, a large open space is filled with examples of the collaborating artists's works. These include delightful gorillas by Angus Fairhurst, compelling installations by Damien Hirst, and inedible sandwiches by Sarah Lucas, plus more wallpapers by the first pair. This is a very jolly exhibition which also seems to be full of in-jokes. The title, for example, derives from the mishearing of the title of rock lyric meant by its drunken originator to be called "In the Garden of Eden". The exhibition leaflet confirms a serious underlying theme: "The works... repeatedly return to ideas about the uncertainty of existence, and our constant search for meaning..."

Extractions: When the first edition of this book was published almost three decades ago it ignited a revival of interest in Pre-Raphaelite painting. A landmark book, it helped to attract both scholars and a new generation of admirers to the brilliant and audacious work of the small group of young English artists who, in 1848. founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. In this completely revised and updated second edition, Staley takes into account important paintings that have recently come to light, as well as current understandings of the Pre-Raphaelite movement and its legacy. The author provides a comprehensive account of the background and formation of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, the role of landscape in major Pre-Raphaelite figurative paintings, and the emergence and impact of a school of Pre-Raphaelite landscape painting as well as its place in the wider tradition of British landscape painting. The important Pre-Raphaelite figures, John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt, and Ford Madox Brown are discussed; as are the main landscape specialists affected by the movement: Thomas Seddon, George Price Boyce, John William Inchbold, and John Brett. Attention is paid to the significant influence of John Ruskin and his active involvement with many of the artists.

The identity Brett initially forged at the Academy was of one of the Pre-Raphaelite realists encouraged by Ruskin in the late 1850s to reinvent British art. His first love was landscape, and though his figure paintings, such as The Stonebreaker (1857) and The Hedger (1860), gave their landscape settings the prominence that these students of nature made de rigueur for scenes of modern life, nature pure and simple was sufficient subject matter for Brett's more typical productions. Massa, Bay of Naples The Glacier of Rosenlau Summer on the Cliffs , 1891). Although vacationers do not people Brett's sweeping panoramas, they are so highly observed that his images impress primarily as the result of his scrutiny, the object of the gaze as it were. Before his carefully worked canvases the viewer takes on the part of the stroller on the cliffs (see, for instance
