Extractions: window.name='waterhouse'; The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was formed in 1848 in London, England. It was a short lived movement, born from the contemporary spirit of revolution that was prevalent in Europe. The year 1848 saw the overthrow of most European dynasties, and the authoring of the Communist Manifesto by Marx and Engels. Although the events in England were not so dramatic, there was a strong public feeling for the need of governmental reforms, led by a group known as the Chartists. The Chartists organized an important meeting in London in April, 1848 to show the strong public support for legal and parliamentary reforms. While not successful at those tasks, the meeting attracted the interest of many English youth, including two young members of London's Royal Academy. The artistic movement that arose from this meeting lasted only about five years, but began changes that had a profound effect on British painting. The painting revolution in France is seen by many to have begun with French Impressionism about twenty years after the Pre-Raphaelites in England. However, France saw Neo-Classicism, led by Jaques-Louis David, form at about the time of the French Revolution (1789). It gave an artistic alternative of social responsibility to the frivolous paintings of royal privilege of the time. The situation in British art was different. Since the beginning of the century, there had been diverse styles influencing the arts. From realism in nature, to romance (J.W.Turner), to academic (John Constable), to spiritual/mythical (William Blake). There was concern within the British painting establishment about the direction of painting. Direction and standards were needed. The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was initially composed of a secret group of seven men, either student painters in London's Royal Academy schools, or their friends. The cryptogram "PRB" appeared on their paintings. The Brotherhood provided a direction. It was a new form of realism, part spiritual, and part presenting a new sense of actuality.

Extractions: Thank you. The Pre-Raphelite Brotherhood was formed in 1848 by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, his brother William Michael Rossetti, William Holman Hunt, Thomas Woolner, Frederic George Stephens, James Collinson, and John Everett Millais. The Pre-Raphelites were opposed to the training promoted by the British Royal Academy Schools and sought to break away from the somber palettes, pretentious effects and conventional subject matter. Despite early criticism of the Brotherhood's style and intent, the response to the work of the PRB was overall favorable. Although some of the artists used subjects from modern life, poetry and literature (particularly Shakespeare, Keats, and Tennyson) were favorite sources for Pre-Raphaelite paintings. As time passed, many artists' work reflected the Pre-Raphaelite style which seemed to liberate art from nature and morality. My favorite Pre-Raphelite artist is John William Waterhouse. While very much a classical painter, Waterhouse has been often classed as a Pre-Raphaelite, because of his dedication to beautiful girls in the Pre-Raphaelite style, fondness for the idea of the femme fatale, and realism.
