In 1843, while attending lectures at the Royal Academy Schools, he met Sir John Everett Millais, who together with Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti formed the pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Hunt's linear style filled with minute details and an unswerving morality made him a natural and key element of the movement. In 1849, a trip to France and Belgium exposed him to the Flemish primitives, with whom he had a natural affinity. During trips to Egypt and Palestine in 1854 and 1892, Hunt painted his two great religious works, "Finding of Christ in the Temple", and "The Scapegoat". Although the pre-Raphaelites broke up in 1852, Hunt remained loyal to that style until his death in 1910.

    Extractions: FROM LITERATURE TO ART William Holman Hunt (1827-1910) was one of the three founder-members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, along with (Sir) John Everett Millais (1829-96) and Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-82). Practically all of the Pre-Raphaelites, including those of the 'second wave' such as (Sir) Edward Burne-Jones (1833-98), William Morris (1834-96) and John William Waterhouse (1849-1917), chose literary subjects for their paintings, while some of them were in fact writers as well as artists, most notably Rossetti and Morris. The literature chosen for depiction tended towards the romantic and the medieval, with subjects from Shakespeare, Keats and Tennyson predominating. However, this is not to suggest that literature in paintings was a Pre-Raphaelite invention: long before the founding of the Brotherhood in 1848, artists were making thorough use of literary subjects, particularly from the works of Shakespeare, Milton and Sir Walter Scott. Hunt was an avid reader from his youth: he particularly enjoyed the novels of Charles Dickens, and immediately began to respond to their visual potential. Even as a young City clerk, before embarking in earnest on a painting career, he spent his spare moments painting pictures from Barnaby Rudge (1841) on the wooden panels of his office.

He gained admission to the Royal Academy on his third attempt, and there met Millais and afterwards Rossetti, and together they founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Hunt stayed faithful to the Pre-Raphaelite ideas and painting techniques, and he claimed that he never modified his: Uncompromising assertion of the principles of truth in preference to beauty. Hunt's paintings - nearly all religious or moralistic - have messages to be read and are characterised by extreme detail and a brightness of light that makes the colour somewhat harsh. Hunt's paintings were painstaking efforts, and he took a long time on each one. He made various journeys to the Middle East, and painted scenes of Jerusalem. The best known of them all is The Light of the World. He also produced book illustrations for the Moxton Tennyson.
