Extractions: Godward is yet another late 19th century neoclassical painter who was bulldozed aside with the coming of the modernist stampede of the early 20th century. At an exhibit of various paintings of this genre at the Getty Museum I asked some questions of the docent about Godward and she showed me the sum of the information available on him and his works (she claimed this was all that has ever been written about him) and it filled perhaps half a page. Unfortunately Godward committed suicide after being savaged by critics and reportedly left a note indicating something to the effect that the world was not big enough for him and a Picasso The Favorite Dolce far Niente (1904) Tigerskin The Toilet ... Extractions: John William Godward As a painter of classy marble and women, Godward is usually compared with Alma Tadema , but the similarity is superficial: the latter's strong narrative element is and inventive cropping are missing. Godward was really a 'beauty painter' an insult more usually thrown at Bouguereau with a formula: one more-or-less classically more-or-less draped lady set against a background divided horizontally into panels of marble and idealized Mediterranean landscape. But Godward did have a huge repertoire of coloured marbles: Alma Tadema usually stuck to the plain white stuff. Godward's formula is not to be sneezed at: neither the coloured marble nor the see-through costumes are easy to paint (have a go!). Each one took him just under a month, and although his art became increasingly remote from mainstream there was, apparently, a good market right up to his death by suicide: there is no clear reason why he decided to turn on the gas.

Extractions: John William Godward (British, 1861-1922) Biography John William Godward was one of the best of the followers of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. (Alma-Tadema's followers are now known as 'The Marble School'). Godward devoted his whole life to painting girls in classical robes, usually posing decoratively on a marble terrace. Unlike many of Alma-Tadema's followers, Godward painted well and at his best was almost as good as, if not sometimes better than, Alma-Tadema. Unfortunately, he had come into an area of painting that was already overcrowded with artists who were striving to find new variations on a theme that was overworked by the turn of the century. By the 1920s most Victorian paintings had become a subject of mockery, and none more so than the neo-classical subjects. Godward was unable to change his style of painting and when, he found himself unable to sell his paintings, he committed suicide by putting his head in a gas oven. His family were so ashamed of Godward and his suicide that they destroyed almost all of his papers and photographs. Not one photograph of him survives. Godward exhibited 19 pictures at the Royal Academy between 1886 and 1916 and he lived for some time in Chelsea, London.

Extractions: Little has been recorded of the life of John William Godward. Inspired by the painter Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema, Godward imitated his Neoclassical style. Both were counted among the members of the "Marble School," known for its depictions of subjects drawn from ancient Greek and Roman life placed in elaborate settings, with especially careful and realistic rendering of details like marble and flowers. Godward regularly exhibited his paintings at the prestigious Royal Academy in London, where they were initially greatly admired by the public. By the time he was in his fifties, however, the Marble School's approach had fallen out of favor. Godward nonetheless continued to paint in this manner until his death at age sixty-one.
