Extractions: Artist: GEROME, JEAN LEON (Haute-Saone, 1824 - Paris, 1904) Date: c. 1865 - 1868 Medium: ORIGINAL ETCHING Note: Jean Leon Gerome: One of Frances most famous painters of the late nineteenth century, Jean-Leon Gerome came to Paris in 1841 and studied in the studio of Paul Delaroche and later under Charles Gleyre. His first major painting was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1847. Gerome first established himself as a leading neo-classicist painter. In 1855, however, he traveled to Turkey to make studies for a large, official commission. He became fascinated with the life and culture of the East and made many more subsequent journeys to Egypt (1857 to 1880), Turkey, Algiers and elsewhere. His paintings of these areas were shown extensively in France, Italy and Germany and gained for him membership into the Imperial Institute (1865), Knighthood in the Legion of Honour (1867), honourary membership to the British Royal Academy (1869) and the award of the Red Eagle, from the King of Prussia. Jean-Leon Gerome was at the centre of the movement now known as Orientalism. Briefly, Orientalist artists dedicated their work to the more exotic elements of Eastern culture and life. Before the era of Impressionism it was a most influential force throughout Europe and its presentation of rich colouration and exotic subjects affected even some abstract artists of the twentieth century.

This painting is distinguished by its compelling solemnity, as a kingly male lion, silhouetted against the flat and endless desert horizon, gazes at the setting sun. Separated by a vast distance, these two powers seem to commune privately in a primal and eternal harmony.

Extractions: Gérômes father, a goldsmith from Vésoul, discouraged his son from studying to become a painter but agreed, reluctantly, to allow him a trial period in the studio of Paul Delaroche in Paris. Gérôme proved his worth, remaining with Delaroche from 1840 to 1843. When Delaroche closed the studio in 1843, Gérôme followed his master to Italy. Pompeii meant more to him than Florence or the Vatican, but the world of nature, which he studied constantly in Italy, meant more to him than all three. An attack of fever brought him back to Paris in 1844. He then studied, briefly, with Charles Gleyre, who had taken over the pupils of Delaroche. Gérôme attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and entered the Prix de Rome competition as a way of going back to Italy. In 1846 he failed to qualify for the final stage because of his inadequate ability in figure drawing. To improve his chances in the following years competition, he painted an academic exercise of two large figures, a nude youth, crouching in the pose of Chaudets marble Eros (1817; Paris, Louvre), and a lightly draped young girl whose graceful mannerism recalls the work of Gérômes colleagues from the studio of Delaroche. Gérôme added two fighting cocks (he was very fond of animals) and a blue landscape reminiscent of the Bay of Naples. Delaroche encouraged Gérôme to send

Delaroche's style, which he naturally communicated to his students, was a fusion of the academic Neo-classical school and the dramatic subject matter of the romantics in which the universal themes of the former were replaced with the personal psychological studies typical of the latter, resulting in, what might be termed, a historical genre painting style.
