Extractions: Fantastical Folk Fairies Christina Patrick Folk culture in Britain has always included tales However, Fitzgerald definitely paints the darker side of the subject, with pictures of dreaming people and mostly malicious ethereal images floating around them. There is a definite connection made in the work of Paton and Fitzgerald with the world of drug-induced nightmares and that of fairies and goblins. Laudanum, a hallucinogen so widely used that it was called the aspirin of the 19th century, is thought to have been the root of much of this fantasy creativeness and also the more sinister levels that exist in much of the work. Come Onto These Yellow Sands is a scene from The Tempest , framed by a painted proscenium arch decorated with theatrical scenes, and contains some of the most breathtakingly beautiful Pre-Raphaelite nudes. Their skin is delicately painted in the most minute changing of shades since some figures are almost translucent in appearance, with others seemingly glowing with a magical light against the deepest blue night sky and murky green seas. In my opinion, this is the most captivating of all the pieces on display - more for the style than the overall themed fairy topic. Containing some stunning art, this exhibition is a lovely way to spend an hour or so. However, much depends on personal opinion of the varying artists as opposed to the thematic grouping of the pieces. If these are artists that you like, then the ticket price is definitely worth it, but you may find yourself quickly walking by quite a few of the exhibits.

Blinking in the unaccustomed sunlight afterwards, I found myself thinking how very normal the average hobgoblin is, compared to the slippery recesses of the Victorian mind. It all starts with Shakespeare. Being part of the literary canon, the Bard was sacrosanct: and since

Unfortunately the quality and execution of a number of the other works appears to be somewhat amateur, not what I expect from "some of the best artists in the US, Europe and Japan".The focus is on the contemporary, it may have been better to us a combination of the contemporary and classic images, then you may have a reference book truly worth keeping. One for the die hard fanatic See more reviews on our selected book reviews sites.

Extractions: JOHN ARTHUR WILLIAMS , under the pen name of "John Arthur" began drawing and painting in his father's art studio as a child and has not stopped since. He began his career as a professional artist and illustrator more than twenty-five years ago and his paintings have graced the covers of books, magazines, and periodicals and have been viewed worldwide. His limited edition prints and portfolios have sold internationally, and he is currently working on his fourth children's picture book. His oils, pen & ink and pencil work all center around the same theme; the human figure. " There is no greater subject ," the artist says. " For me, the figure is a vehicle for the soul. It all starts with the face; the expression, the attitude, the emotion. The body follows: the head upturned, the torso tilted or twisted, the arms outstretched, the hands, the feet- all have a part in the end result ."
