Of all fairy paintings, Fitzgerald's have the most overt references to drug-induced hallucinations. The Nightmare Rabbit Among the Fairies

Extractions: Coleridge If one thought leads to another, so often does it blot out another. This I find, when having lain musing on my sofa, a number of interesting thoughts having suggested themselves, I cannot conquer my bodily indolence and rise to record them in these books, alas! my only confidants. The first thought leads me on indeed to new ones; but nothing but the faint memory of having had them remains of the others, which had been even more interesting to me. I do not know, whether this be an idiosyncrasy, a peculiar disease, of my particular memory- but so it is with me. My thoughts crowd each other to death. I also lay back on the futon sofa here in my home office to relax and let my mind wander, so I enjoyed hearing that Samuel used that approach. I find it one of the best ways for me to let the inspiration rise to the surface, is by laying back on the sofa, relaxing and seeing what comes up. Seems that

Extractions: Click image to enlarge According to art historians, The Golden Age of Fairy Painting occurred in 19th-century England during the reign of Queen Victoria, casting its spell of enchantment on artists right up to the present day. During that time, fairy pictures by eminent painters were hung in respectable galleries, viewed by the kind of large audiences that now flock to blockbuster films. "Ill Omen: Girl in the East Wind with Ravens Crossing the Moon" Click image to enlarge often drawn from myths and legends, rarely painted "the little people" themselves yet a single fairy picture by John Everett Millais, "Ferdinand Lured by Ariel," was much admired by subsequent painters (although the original buyer rejected the picture because the fairies were "too green"). Younger painters in the "second wave" of Pre-Raphaelitism (including E. R. Hughes, Eleanor Fortescue-Birckdale, John Atkinson Grimshaw, the Birmingham Group, and the Celtic Revivalists in Scotland) turned to fairy subjects more regularly not only in gallery paintings but in a wide variety of arts & crafts. Margaret Macdonald McIntosh, Frances Macdonald MacNair, Jessie M. King, Annie French, and the other "Glasgow Girls" in Scotland from the 1880s onward created fairy imagery in metalwork, jewelry, ceramics, textiles, and even furniture design, in addition to gallery paintings, murals, and illustrated books.

NEW YORK CITY - Attracting record crowds in British and American venues, "Victorian Fairy Painting" continues at the Frick Collection. This is the first comprehensive exhibition ever devoted to this distinctly British genre, which was critically and commercially popular from the early Nineteenth Century through the beginning of World War I. The 34 paintings, works on paper, and objects were selected by Edgar Munhall, curator of the Frick Collection, from the original, larger touring exhibition, which was organized by the University of Iowa Museum of Art and the Royal Academy of Arts, London. Fairy painting brought together many opposing elements in the collective psyche and artistic sensibility of its time: rich subject-matter, an escape from the grim elements of an industrial society, an indulgence of new attitudes towards sex, a passion for the unknown, and a denial of the exactitude of photography. Drawing on literary inspiration from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream to Sir Walter Scott's Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border
