More than any of the other artists working in this genre, he was able to suggest the existence of a coherent alternative world, which was ethereal and bizarre. He exhibited in most of the major London exhibitions from 1845 onwards, showing works at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, the Society of British Artists, the Watercolour Society, and the Dudley Gallery (Nahum). Extractions: This painting shows a night-time scene where a small troupe of fairies has arrived at the entrance to a Gothic ruin. Through the arch a brilliant light shines, illuminating the fairy group. One of them carries a wreath and a chain of flowers. In its original frame, this is one of Fitzgerald's most haunting and tantalising fairy paintings. The fairies are certainly acting with intent and may, indeed, be up to no good - which would be characteristic of Fitzgerald. Extractions: John Anster Fitzgerald (British, 1823-1906) Biography Son of a much ridiculed poet, William Thomas Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald appears to have had little or no formal training, but from 1845 he was exhibiting at the British Institution and the Royal Academy. Although he is chiefly known for his fairy pieces, Fitzgerald seems to have made a living as a portrait painter and illustrator, although he also painted genre scenes. By the late 1850s he had become a regular contributor to The Illustrated London News, and in 1864 he was a candidate for the Society of British Artists. He was a member of the Maddox Street Sketching Club. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1845 to 1902. Like his father, Fitzgerald played on his Irish ancestry and was remembered by members of the Savage Club for his burlesque imitations of old-time actors and theatrical managers. Extractions: Fitzgerald discovered his true vocation in fairy painting, and his series of 'dream' paintings, in which sleepers are plagued by hideous creatures from fairyland, give an indication of where he found the images for his fantastic world. Of all fairy paintings, Fitzgerald's have the most overt references to drug-induced hallucinations. Here the artist has fallen asleep in front of his easel on which there is a painting of a fairy. In his dream he sees the model turn her head to look at him. The artist is Fitzgerald himself, the beautiful fairy is perhaps La Sylphide, the elves and goblins are those that make up the cast of dream-induced horrors in many of his paintings. An earlier dream painting, The Captive Dreamer (shown at Maddox Street Sketching Club, 1856), shows a sleeping girl pillowed on a gross and silmy dragon and menaced by grotesque figures taken from the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch and Jan Bruegel the Elder.
