Born in Liverpool, he studied miniature painting and wood engraving in his youth and was apprenticed to W.J.Linton. His paintings and book illustrations were influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and by Japanese prints. books("0486418588"); With the designer William Morris he was a leader in the Arts and Crafts movement, which sought to reform the decorative arts. Crane in 1888, becoming their first President. The object of the body was to assist in the revival of the art and handicrafts currently occurring, and to draw attention to the craftsmen involved. Walter Crane also illustrated books for William Morris and other publishers including The Frog Prince (1874), Household Stories from Grimm (1882), and his masterpiece, Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queene (1894-1896). He illustrated 50 complete books between 1865 and 1886 and continued with at least two books a year until the end of the century. By 1869 Crane had evolved his personal and distinctive manner of illustration and was not only signing his work but his books were issued by the publishers in a separate category under the heading "Walter Crane Toy Books."

Apprenticed as a youth to an engraver, he developed his artistic talents, especially strong in illustration and design. His employer was the former Chartist, William Linton, who introduced him to political ideas and also got him commissions with influential political figures. Crane became established as a ceramic designer, children's book illustrator and interior designer. In the 1860s Crane became more politically active as a supporter of the radical wing of the Liberal Party and by the time of the Paris Commune in 1871, he was a socialist. He began long-time collaboration with William Morris in the 1880s, having common ground as designers and both appalled by industrial design over craftsmanship and artistry that was articulated in Morris's pamphlet Art and Socialism. This location was finally selected. I climbed the ladder on top of the crane, while at the same time Walter climbed the overhanging underside of the crane. During the climb Walter carried a helmet with a small camera. This crane is publicly accessible. It just says "Ascend at your own risk". I asked - and got - permission of the owner to climb it and make the TV recordings. With the climbers from Utrecht we decided that this was an ideal spot. Photogenic with it's combination of old machinery, cobblestones and modern architecture. During the recordings Walter and I climbed this ladder. Then we hung from the top and we rappeled in tandem. He was born in Liverpool on 15 August 1845, moving to London with his family in 1857. After a period during which he worked on illustrations for a poem of Tennyson, he became apprenticed to the famous wood engraver William James Linton and studied drawing in his spare time. In 1862 he exhibited The Lady of Shalott at the Royal Academy. His first illustrated book, The New Forest , was published the following year. He was a great admirer of Edward Burne-Jones, whose work he first saw at the Old Watercolour Society in 1865. In his autobiography he recalled what a deep impression Burne-Jones' pictures made upon him: 'The curtain had been lifted, and we had a glimpse into a magic world of romance and pictured poetry, peopled with ghosts of "ladies dead and lovely knights" - a twilight world of dark mysterious woodlands, haunted streams, meads of deep green starred with burning flowers, veiled in a dim and mystic light, and stained with low-toned crimson and gold..'

Linton , the engraver. Crane's first painting at the Royal Academy was The Lady of Shalott In 1888 Crane was instrumental in the establishment of the Art and Crafts Exhibition Society, of which he was the first President. The object of the body was to assist in the revival of arts and handicrafts currently occurring, and to draw attention to the craftsmen involved. William Morris Edward Burne-Jones , Lewis F. Day, Heywood Sumner , Philip Webb and Onslow Ford were included in the founding members of the Society. He was appointed part time Director of Design at the Manchester School of Art from 1893-6 and Principal of the Royal College of Art from 1897-8, continuing to be a member of the governing council of that body thereafter and a strong supporter of Government-sponsored art education. He wrote important books on decoration and design, including The Decorative Illustration of Books (1896) and Line and Form (1900). Crane defined design in terms of ornament, the aim being 'ideal beauty rather than literal fact'. Regarding book illustration, he had much to say on the integration of pictures with text. For example, he noted the difference between an easel painting, complete in itself, where the frame is a boundary isolating it from the surroundings, as compared to a decorative design, which must relate to its surroundings:

Today, just as in his own time, Walter Crane is recognized as one of the greatest and most innovative of all children's book illustrators. Born in Liverpool in 1845, Walter Crane was the son of portrait painter, miniaturist, and lithographer Thomas Crane. Shortly after Walter's birth, Thomas' poor health forced the Crane family to move to Torquay, an unspoiled rural area in Devonshire. This move was perhaps fortunate for Walter, who noted later in life that his love of landscapes and of the sea was the result of spending his early childhood in this idyllic place. Walter Crane's formal education was minimal. Apart from nursery school, some tutoring by governesses and a brief period spent as a student at a small local school in Torquay, Walter's sensitive nerves and the financial situation of his middle-class family combined to limit his schooling. In 1857 the family moved to London, where some halfhearted attempts were made at locating a school for Walter and his brother Tom. Nothing ever came of these efforts, and Walter's school days were ended. Young Walter's real education took place in his father's studio, where he could browse through illustrated books and journals as he developed his natural talent for drawing. He practiced by sketching the hands and faces of Thomas Crane's portrait commissions. Soon, guided by his father, Walter began painting in oils and designing illustrations for stories and poetry.
