Extractions: Convent Thoughts - Charles Allston Collins Oil on Canvas : c.1850-51 : 32"x22" : Ashmolean Museam : Oxford A nun, probably a novice, contemplating the crucifixion of Christ as s symbolised as a passion flower - so called by the cross shaped form of the stamens. The manuscript in her hand is open showing the crucifixion and the Virgin Mary, to whom she is implicitly likened. The inscription at the top of the frame reads, " As the lily among thorns", an image applied frequently to the Virgin Mary. Here it is taken up in the white lilies near the nun and (for the thorns) the roses towards the back of the flower beds. The garden also contains turk's-cap lilies, water lies and an African lily. The image of "the garden enclosed" is also associated with the Virgin and virginity and Collins may have had that in mind as well when devising the iconography of his picture. The goldfish, some red, some white, seem to echo the major themes of Christ's sacrifice and the nun's purity. The background was painted during the summer of 1850. It was begun at Botley, near Oxford, where

Extractions: The Children of Charles Dickens Charles and Catherine Dickens had ten children. There is circumstantial evidence that Dickens and Ellen Ternan had a child that died shortly after being born. However this has never been proven. Charles Culliford Boz Dickens (1837-1896) Charles was known as Charley within the family. Charley married Bessie Evans despite the fact that his father had disagreements with Bessie's father. Charley was involved in banking and business. In 1868 he went into bankruptcy and was then hired by his father to work at All The Year Round. He bought Gad's Hill Place after his father died, but later gave it up because of his own failing health. Mary Dickens (1838-1896) - Mary was named after her mother's sister who died in 1837. After her father's death she lived with her aunt, Georgina. Mary went on to write My Father as I Recall Him Kate Macready Dickens (1839-1929) - When Dickens and Catherine separated Kate was the only child to stand up to Dickens and side with Catherine. That shouldn't have been a surprise to Dickens as Kate had been called "Lucifer Box" within the family because of her fiery temper. She married Charles Allston Collins and after his death she married Carlo Perugini.

Extractions: Search the site: Alderbury and Whaddon ARCHITECT Augustus Pugin, literary giants Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins, and modern master Louis de Bernière all have associations with Alderbury and Whaddon. Drive along the main road from the Alderbury bypass as you pass through Clarendon and reach the outskirts of Alderbury and you will pass the Gothic turreted splendour of St Marie's Grange. This was Pugin's dream house, built to his own design when he was just 23 and two years married. It boasted three towers, a spiral staircase, parlour, library, chapel, two bedrooms, domestic quarters and superb views across the Avon Valley to the Cathedral. "It is," he later wrote, "the only modern building that is compleat in every part in the antient style." The annuitant style was something he favoured strongly - he restored much of John Halle's hall (now the Odeon cinema, Salisbury) to his vision of medieval glory and, after his conversion to Catholicism in 1835, was instrumental in the redesign of the city's St Osmund's church including some of the stained glass windows.

Extractions: APPIAN STAFF WRITER New undergraduate housing, a science hub and relocated museums may also become a part of the new campus. But Collins said existing relationships with Cambridge schools and colleagues would not necessarily disappear, even as Allston opens up new opportunities for collaboration. The committee has imagined a number of potential uses for the new space, including a student center and a professional development center for visiting teachers. Collins will be heading up the effort to solicit community opinion on how the HGSE might use the space. This may depend on who will be paying for the new campus, which would appear to be an impossibilty for HGSE, whose share of the University endowment dwarfs only those of the Graduate Schools of Design and Dentistry.
