A pointed roof made of stone slates. The water no longer flows. The fountain is now ornamental. Eleanor Vere Boyle, wife of Richard Boyle the Rectorr of Marston and living in Marston House, was a typical Victorian woman noted for her good works in the area. A writer and illustrator of children's books she put the money she earned to bringing clean water to the district. Lower Marston is a tiny village just below the big house.EVB designed the fountainhead herself and arranged for the water to be piped from a source adjacent to Marston House - a considerable distance - at a cost of £120.00. When the water was flowing from the new fountain in that July day in 1952, Mrs Boyle served tea to the assembled villagers. The present site of the restored fountain was prepared by Trudoxhill Parish Council with support from Mendip DC in 1998. circa c raw year Condition Fair At risk Not at risk Inscriptions Signatures Elements Element Details Part of work Material Dimensions Fountain Doulting stone Assessment of Condition

(Michael Garvie) The pedatel rose from the water and was carved with ivy and narcissi. Four jets of water were concealed in this foliage. Engraved round the base of the cross was the motto of the Boyle family 'God's Providence is mine inheritance'. The cross was nine feet high, octagonal in form ornamented with four series of crockets diminishing in siz as they mounted the shaft. The whole was carved from a single piece of the finest red Devon marble weighing nearly a ton, polished and reflected in the sparkling water. A foliate cross finished at the pinnacle. At present the vandalised cross has been removed by Mendip DC for repairs The fountain is also 'dry' but water is promised when the cross is re-erected. Joseph Chapman was from a dynasty of Frome builders and sculptors and took six months to built the cross. Richard Boyle was the rector of Marston Bigot from 1836 to 1875, EVB was his gifted, artistic wife, and both took great interest in Frome and before leaving Frome gave the ornamental fountain to the town. EVB's great interest in water also led her to pump water to the fountain in Lower Marston (see SO57).

Beauty And The Beast Story Theatre with Mme. Vestris as Beauty, Walter Cranes picture bookin 1875, and eleanor vere boyles illustrated novella of 1875. http://www.balletmet.org/Notes/StoryOrigin.html
Extractions: (Compiled April, 1997) The story of Beauty and the Beast has been around for centuries in both written and oral form, and more recently in film and video. Many experts trace similarities back to the stories of Cupid and Psyche Oedipus The Golden Ass of the second century A.D. The tale of Beauty and the Beast Le piacevolo notti (The Nights of Straparola) 1550-53. The earliest French version is an ancient Basque tale where the father was a king and the beast a serpent. Charles Perrault popularized the fairy tale with his collection in 1697. The 17th century Pentamerone is also said to include similar tales. The first truly similar tale to the one we know today was published in 1740 by Madame Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Gallon de Villeneuve as part of a collection of stories (told by an old woman during a long sea voyage). Mme. de Villeneuve wrote fairy tale romances drawn from earlier literature and folk tales for the entertainment of her salon friends.
