Data Delayed 20 Mins OAS_AD('Top'); Martha Stewart Convicted on All Four Counts Monday, March 08, 2004 OAS_AD('Middle'); Stewart, 62, grimaced and her eyes widened slightly upon hearing the verdict, and she later released a statement maintaining her innocence and promising an appeal. The government now may press to have her removed from the board of her company. She stepped down as chief executive after being indicted last summer but remains as chief creative officer. Stewart was found guilty of conspiracy, making false statements and obstruction of justice. The charges carry up to 20 years in prison at sentencing June 17, but she will most certainly get much less than that under federal sentencing guidelines. Peter Bacanovic search ), 41, was convicted of conspiracy, perjury, making a false statement and obstruction of justice, but was acquitted of making a false document. "Maybe it's a victory for the little guys who lose money in the market because of these kinds of transactions," said juror Chappell Hartridge. Stewart left the courtroom with a somber expression, and she did not speak to anyone at the defense table before going to a holding room away from the media. She and Bacanovic must report to a probation office within a week for processing.

OAS_AD('Top'); Martha Stewart: Buying Jail Buddies in Advance? Thursday, March 25, 2004 By Roger Friedman Martha Stewart Courtney Love 'The Alamo' Johnny Bristol OAS_AD('Middle'); Martha Stewart: Buying Jail Buddies in Advance? We know from Martha Stewart 's TV show and magazine that she likes to plan ahead, so this story doesn't seem so far-fetched. It's not like there won't be compensation. Stewart, or she told friends recently at a dinner, has offered remuneration to the woman's family on the outside of prison, sources said. Of course, anyone in prison who's been convicted of embezzlement must pay restitution, so finding a patron saint in Martha Stewart would be a windfall. I spoke to the husband of one new Danbury inmate who fit the description. He said that neither Stewart nor her attorneys had contacted him. "But my wife's down there, and she'd be a great friend to Martha if she needs one," he told me. "She's a fan." Stewart will be sentenced on June 17 and should start serving her term two weeks later. Just so you know, it's not a fait accompli that Martha is definitely going to Danbury, even though it's the closest federal prison to her home. But should she go there, Stewart will be one of 1,300 women, some of whom are embezzlers, and some who are doing time for far more unsavory offenses.

Ask the Expert: Air Conditioners
It's time for the first installment of Ask the Expert, or as we like to call it, Ask-the-Expert-a-Totally-Unimportant-Question-of-No-Benefit-to-Anyone. It's where we ask someone a question that's completely meaningless and of little practical value, but may very well be something you've wondered about anyway. Today we're talking to an air conditioner repairman from the Bronx named Ed (that's not him pictured above by the way; Ed doesn't like people taking pictures of him). But we're not asking Ed which air conditioner you should buy, how many BTUs you'll need to cool your bedroom, or how to install that Friedrich unit in your window. All we want to know about are those mysterious drops of liquid that descend from the sky when the warm weather arrives. NYish : You're an air conditioner repairman, right?
Ed : Yea.
NYish : So, like, what's the deal with the drops falling from the sky? It is water? Some sort of toxic coolant?
Ed : It's water. Basically what happens is warm air passes over cooling coils and the cooling action causes condensate to form. That's what drips off the cooling coils.

I think in some ways it is a good idea provided the rule of law is followed. However, it raises one question with me. Why, if an individual believes they are innocent should they need to say anything.? To me it looks like a lame attempt to protect the one thing they are interested in and that is there money. I have no respect at all for Martha Stewart as she is a greedy nasty individual who does not deserve to be protected. Her greed which is well known is her own down fall. I mean to lose 250 thousand is nothing compared to what she would still have if she hadn't have been so greedy. Michael Jackson, well, Im not sure on that one at all but I think he should say nothing and deal with it through the courts. rick

Why Martha Stewart should go to heaven and the SEC
should go to hell.
Michael McMenamin

June did not bring much sunshine for New York City or good news for Martha Stewart. After twisting in the wind for nearly a year and a half, the Diva of Domesticity was sued for insider trading by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and indicted for securities fraud and obstruction of justice by the Department of Justice. Those who are salivating over Stewart’s demise should put down their forks. In early 2002, when she was first questioned by the feds, all the news outlets reported speculation, based on anonymous government sources, that she had sold the last remnant of her ImClone stock on December 27, 2001, because her buddy, ImClone founder and CEO Sam Waksal, had told her that the Food and Drug Administration was about to reject an application for Erbitux, the company’s highly touted cancer drug. The news reports also suggested that she had lied to the feds about Waksal’s tip. But as the government now tacitly admits, neither of these allegations is true. That fact helps explain why the feds waited until June 2003 to bring charges: They had trouble finding anything to pin on Stewart.

Martha Stewart's Talking
Martha Stewart, the one woman Miss Manners calls a "repressed control addict with a sphincter that could snap broomsticks," is reportedly thinking of taking up a new career as a stool pigeon. In order to get out of the deep sorbet she's gotten herself into, a source says she's going to give the FBI important information in exchange for immunity from prosecution. That's a good enough excuse for us to provide you a chance to make The Martha tell the world what you think she ought to be saying. Just slide your saying of choice into the form below and you'll soon have a custom decoration for printing or publicizing.

JUNE 4Martha Stewart was named today in a nine-count indictment charging her with obstruction of justice and lying to federal investigators in connection with a government probe of her alleged insider trading of ImClone stock. The indictment, which you'll find below, alleges that Stewart, 61, lied to federal investigators when questioned about the circumstances of her December 2001 stock sale, which came just before ImClone's share price collapsed (a move that saved the multimillionaire a whopping $45,000). Peter Bacanovic, Stewart's former Merrill Lynch broker, was also named in the 41-page indictment. Since we usually do not post such lengthy documents, we've broken the indictment into three parts, accessible via the links below.
