Imagine! Eileen Collins was the first woman pilot of a Space Shuttle! Lt. Colonel Eileen Marie Collins was born in Elmira, New York on November 19, 1956. As a child, Eileen dreamed about space and of becoming a pilot. Her parents often took her to the airport to watch the planes take off and land. The Collins family wanted Eileen to attend college, but did not have the money to send her. After high school, she attended Corning Community College. While there, she studied hard to earn a two year scholarship to Syracuse University. In 1978 Eileen Collins graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics and economics from Syracuse University. Later, she went on to earn a master of science degree in operations research from Stanford University and a master of arts degree in space systems management from Webster University. In 1979, Lt. Colonel Collins graduated from Air Force Undergraduate Pilot Training at Vance Air Force Base. In 1990, while attending the Air Force Test Pilot School, she was selected for the astronaut program. Eileen Collins became an astronaut in July 1991 and the first woman to pilot the Space Shuttle on February 2, 1995. She made history once again in 1999. On July 23 Lt. In the Air Force she was a T-38 instructor pilot and a C-141 aircraft commander. Today she has flown more than 5,000 hours in more than 30 type of aircraft.
When Commander Collins, 42, and her crew launch into space on Columbia, in Spring 1999, she will be taking with her the hopes and dreams of a nation of young people here on Earth. She's an energetic and slender woman with short curly hair and friendly brown eyes. Eileen grew up in a family with two brothers, a sister and "two very supportive parents." Her parents, Jim and Rose Collins describe her as, "a very ordinary person, a down-to-earth individual. She's very thoughtful - Nobody handed her anything. Everything she is today, she's earned." About high school she said, "I began reading voraciously about famous pilots- from Amelia Earhart to Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) who played an important role in WWII - Their stores inspired me. I admired the courage of these women to go and fly into dangerous situations!"
By 1977 Eileen had saved enough money to earn a pilot's license and the following year graduated from Syracuse University. With good grades, flying experience and a letter of recommendation from her ROTC supervisor, she became one of the first women to go straight from college into Air Force pilot training. " That was by far the biggest break of

On her last mission, Eileen Collins became the first (and currently only) female Shuttle commander. On her next, she will command the historic STS-114 "Return to Flight" mission, the first after the Columbia tragedy.
On becoming an astronaut: "When I was very young and first started reading about astronauts, there were no women astronauts." However, she was inspired while she was a child by the Mercury astronauts, and by the time she was in high school and college, new opportunities were opening up for women in aviation. "My timing was really great," she said. Collins joined the Air Force, and during her first month of training, her base was visited by the newest astronaut classthe first to include womenand her path was set. "I wanted to be part of our nation's space program. It's the greatest adventure on this planetor off the planet, for that matter. I wanted to fly the Space Shuttle."
On being the first and only female Shuttle commander:
"Hopefully not for long!" While the distinction of being the first is an honor, Collins said she's looking forward to losing the part about being the "only" female commander. She said she hopes current astronaut Pam Melroy will soon join her, and that more will follow. "I'm really pulling for her." Collins said that she encourages young women to become test pilots so that they can someday become Shuttle commanders as well. "The young people are going to be the ones to take us on to more exciting adventures."

Eileen Collins was selected by NASA in 1990 and became an astronaut in 1991. In 1999 she became the first woman shuttle commander, leading a crew of four other astronauts on a five-day mission which was highlighted by the deployment of the Chandra X-ray Observatory, the heaviest, largest and most powerful X-ray telescope ever launched into space. She was recently awarded the Empire Freedom Medal by the state of New York for "etching her mark on history by knocking down barriers," according to New York Governor George Pataki. She narrates a 15-minute video of her flight and presents earth-observation photos from the 1999 mission. Listen with Real Audio
