Primary Subject - Language Arts
Secondary Subjects -
Grade Level - 4th
Quotations I. Grade and Developmental Level: 4th Grade Language Arts II. Objective: · Students will be able to punctuate and capitalize quotations correctly. · Students will be able to use quotations correctly in their writing. III. Procedures: · Focus: The teacher will pass out copies of a page in the book The Bernstein Bears Get Stage Fright that contains quotations. The teacher will direct the students to find as many quotations in that passage as they can. Once students have been given time to find the quotations, the teacher will ask for students to raise their hands and point out the quotations they found. The teacher will then explain to the students that they will be discussing quotations. The teacher will also point out that quotations are used in a variety of writing and that knowing how to correctly include quotations in one’s writing is important. · Input: The teacher will explain that a quotation is the exact words of a speaker. The teacher will also explain that quotation marks show where the speaker’s exact words begin and end. The teacher will tell the students that the first word in a quotation begins with a capital letter. Next, the teacher will explain that when a quotation comes last in a sentence, students will use a comma to separate the speaker from the quotation. Finally, the teacher will tell the students how to correctly punctuate a sentence with a quotation in it when that sentence involves a statement, question, or exclamation. The teacher will remind students to remember the period at the end of the sentence. After explaining the correct format to be used when including a quotation in a sentence, the teacher will model correct usage of quotations that meet the criteria mentioned above.

Printable Version for your convenience! Language Arts: Direct and Indirect Quotations by: Diane Perigin GRADE LEVEL: 4th OBJECTIVE: The students will differentiate between direct and indirect qoutations. PROCEDURE: The teacher will write the words to make up a sentence on diferent pieces of paper (1 word per page). The teacher will also have pieces of paper with different punctuation marks, including quotation marks. The teacher will ask for volunteers to take a piece of paper. The students will then look at their word or punctuation mark and line up in the correct order so as to make the sentence make sense. The rest of the class will then read the sentence aloud and determine if the sentence is in correct order, and whether or not it is a direct or indirect quotation. If it is a direct quotation, then two stidents will need a sheet of paper with a quotation mark on it. They will then need to place themselves in the correct position in the sentence.
