What is the Haines Cooperative Libraries?
Since 1989 the Haines Borough Public Library, the Haines Elementary Media Center , the Haines High School Library , and the have been cooperating in a variety of ways to improve library services in our community. By sharing resources and working together to build library collections and to increase access to information via technology, more materials and services can be provided in a more cost-effective manner. The automated card catalog includes all the materials at the four sites. The materials at each site are available for use by all the members of our community. Materials from the schools may be borrowed through the public library or directly from the school media centers. Materials at the Sheldon Museum and Cultural Center may only be used in the museum building.
Brief History of the Public Library
The first Haines Public Library was started by the Haines Women's Club. It was located in a 12' X 12' building at the Alaska Steamship Office. Later, on May 22, 1931, the Haines Women's Club incorporated under the title of "The Haines Library Association" and purchased a 12' X 25' frame house on Main Street. This building is now at the Chilkoot Cultural Camp. By 1957 it was time to grow once again. The Haines Women's Club purchased the land where the current library stands and with the help of many volunteers built a new library, opening officially in August 1958.

Sarasota County Library/Media Program
A committee of Sarasota County school media specialists and district curriculum coordinators, under the direction of Gerry Haworth, Supervisor, Media and Instructional Materials, and Lynn Urban, Instructional Technology Specialist, began meeting during the 2001-2002 school year to research the topic of Information Literacy and discuss plans for developing useful tools to assist teachers and media specialists in effectively teaching information literacy skills. During the summer of 2002, media specialists and teachers began developing the materials found on this website. The materials will continue to be refined and expanded throughout the 2003-2004 school year.
